"Some librarians will already know of this excellent site for young bookworms, or children whose interest in books needs igniting. Anyone planning a Website, or seeking to improve an existing one, can learn a lot from Cook's [the designer's] clever use of Javascript rollovers for the speech bubbles and extra information, and his avoidance of long downloads. No irritating plug-ins are required to view this amusing and educational site.
Do you know what "natron" is? I didn't until I clicked on You Wouldn't Want To Be an Egyptian Mummy and read "Disgusting things you'd rather not know", a heading guaranteed to appeal to children of all ages.
I was also impressed by the clickable split pages, giving a view, for example, of the outside and inside of a volcano. Most impressive of all are the well-chosen links so that children and adult visitors can delve deeper into a subject that interests them. A link to the Ancient Egypt section of the British Museum enabled me to find out that "natron" is a natural salt used to dry out corpses. This is what I call "generous" site-designing, rather than the "selfish" attitude one finds on some sites where the designers, or more probably the corporate owners, don't want the visitor to be distracted, even briefly, from whatever they are trying to sell." |
