By April 1916, the ice breaks up enough for you to launch the three lifeboats. Shackleton decides to make for Elephant Island, 100 miles (160 km) to the north. Everyone is glad to be off the ice at last, but the journey is pretty scary. The little boats weave their way between towering icebergs that threaten to crush them into matchwood. Crashing waves could swamp the boats at any moment.
