World Kid Lit Month

Put simply, World Kid Lit is children’s literature from around the world that’s been translated into English. Examples of this can be seen everywhere – The Little Prince, The Moomins and Pippi Longstocking were all translated into English from other languages. But why is translated literature so important?

As German and Spanish Literary translator Claire Storey writes, translated books can be a gateway for children to understanding other countries and cultures different to their own.

‘If we want our kids to be world citizens and have empathy for other people, we need to talk to them about sensitive subjects, including war and race. Books can be that springboard to open a conversation and help our children to understand the world around them.’
